All will be set right by the Trump line of early 20th century battleships and redoing our aircraft carriers to meet the necessary trumpian aesthetic. And erasing Black and female officers from Hegseth's Department of Defense also makes a certain kind of nostalgic sense. After all, when the Pentagon was built in Jim Crow Virginia, bathrooms were racially segregated. And slavery was simply a minor blip in our history that needs to be ignored. What could be better than the trumpian time machine that takes America backwards while the rest of the world is watching us self-destruct. Excellent piece, Bill!
Strong words --- solidly supported by undeniable facts and life experience. Historians who see this will strain to understand how more than 70 million Americans voted to put the likes of Donald Trump (and J.D. Vance) into the White House. Meanwhile, how many voters who were swept into believing the MAGA lies will rectify their mistake by voting against the Republican extremists who have enabled this assault on our democracy, come this Nov. 3?
For more than a decade, the two critical questions have been "Why?" and "To whose benefit?", with Trump family and crony self-enrichment only a partial answer to both. Undermining if not destroying U.S pre-eminence and leadership in the world across so many fronts strategically benefits global rivals to our detriment, his relentless attacks on U.S. political, economic, and social institutions are destabilizing the country domestically and deepening future uncertainty, and his personal behavior and that of his administration is beyond incompetent in terms of governing a dynamic and diverse country of 350 million in a competitive and ever hostile world. Today, a decade ago, all should ask "why?" and "to whose benefit?", and Senate and House Republicans must be pressed every day to answer those questions. 21st century America and world stability are at stake.
Excellent comments here reflecting on a most excellent piece by Bill Piekney. I would only add Bill's words for emphasis: "Not just US policy, but the good of the whole planet has been set back by an uninformed, unread amateur power player whose principal weapon is a confused mind wrapped in greed and ghastly amounts of money."
Accurate assessment Bill P. I want to get on my desktop and write more and share what this middle American has experienced, how we got here and what everyday people need to understand. Will they see the writing on the wall? Is the corruption so deep that many earn a living, as disappointing that it may be the mob is now running this country? That the assassination of MLK, & Bobby Kennedy could be the restart of McCarthyism? I think so, as going back to even the inception of this country. Those founders were sick of their King. I don’t know I’m just an old tradesman concerned and trying to make sense of the mayhem while trying to inform the people I know. For this guy I trust nothing any longer.
Thanks for your excellent words of truth, Bill! I am literally physically sickened by the stupidity of this regime and their denigration of science, of discovery, of that which makes the US the leader in medical, physical, environmental sciences. Why does the GOP support such a man (?) who is willfully ignorant?
Excellent assessment of drumpf trying to drag us back in time and isolate us from the rest of the world. It also addresses his mental decline this time around. We truly need to vote like our lives depend on it in November because they truly do. sadly a man that can bankrupt casinos is now bankrupting America while getting wealthier himself. Thank you Bill for this post

Well stated sir! I envy your intellect and skills of articulation.

None of us run on nostalgia.
