Great powers declining, often through their own mistakes, is a common historical fact. Since the term "imperial overreach" was coined, lots of ink has been used up discussing how and when the term could be applied to the United States. But what Bill has eloquently written about, which is so head-scratching during the Trump years, is that the U.S. under this President has deliberately set out to cripple itself. We've punted away the trust of our friends and allies. We have strengthened our adversaries. Our standards of acceptable behavior have declined so much that we will have to make major efforts in the future just to be regarded once again as a useful and decent participant in the affairs of the world.

I agree with everything stated.

And it’s terrifying.

I’m so worried about my children and theirs.

Very well-said --- and given Trump's intellectual & moral weaknesses, and also those of the self-serving schemers around him, it's fair to say that we haven't hit bottom yet.

I am going to circulate this in my social media. I suggest everyone do the same. I have been worried about our national security ever since Trump got back in office. It is sometimes hard to sleep at night. Trump has an unexplained over-the-top friendship with Putin. Some people might say his favorable actions towards Russia are those of a traitor.

Trump’s decision, following the failure of peace talks with Iran, to blockage the Strait of Hormuz is most likely going to bring China and others into the fray. The ‘talks’ were never going to succeed, due to red lines that Iran has never conceded in the past. Trump sees his only option to go all in, but with a duff hand, in the desperate hope something will shift in his inevitable political demise. China is not going to sit on the sidelines. It’s no longer a case of whether the situation escalates, but to what degree.

Thank you Bill for such a concise explanation of where we are and where we are headed in this difficult time. Sadly we are in a war we did not need to be in and we are not looked upon with favor from our former allies. They are forming their own pacts to have a better future and building their own military without our inclusion They no longer can trust us due to the erratic behaviors of the current regime in our country ,especially drumpf. I worry for my kids and grandkids and all the young people in the US .
