The 300+ members of The Steady State are former senior national security officials who remain committed to their oaths to “defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” We continue to promote democracy, the rule of law, and national security based on the values shared by most Americans. Steady State members served our country in various capacities within the U.S. national security and homeland security communities—as intelligence officers, defense policymakers, diplomats, and congressional staffers. We have proudly served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Some of us are lifelong Democrats, others Republicans, and some resolutely independent. But today, we speak with one voice.

We are honored to endorse Eugene Vindman for Congress

As a nonpartisan organization of former national security professionals, The Steady State is guided by a singular mission: to defend our constitutional democracy, uphold the rule of law, and protect the integrity of America’s national security institutions. In a time marked by democratic backsliding and the increasing weaponization of intelligence for political gain, Representative Vindman stands as a principled and stabilizing force. He is, without question, the best candidate to lead Virginia’s 7th district through this critical moment.

Throughout his public service, Representative Vindman has demonstrated unwavering fidelity to the Constitution and ethics over partisan loyalty. He has consistently been a champion and example of the apolitical nature of the national security community - a trait that is vital today as the current administration undermines intelligence and national security apparatus to serve political ends. Representative Vindman demonstrated his commitment to apolitical service toward the end of Trump’s first term. Vindman, then a staffer at the NSC, raised his concerns about the Trump administration's withholding of aid to our allies in Ukraine, unless the Ukrainian government acceded to Trump’s demand that the Ukrainian government investigate the Biden family's holdings in Ukraine. Alerting Congress to this misconduct, Representative Vindman proudly stood by his duties as an Army officer, and citizen, throughout the ensuing months. These courageous actions cost him his job on the National Security Council and cemented his legacy as a defender of the Constitution and the rule of law. Representative Vindman brings a rational, merit- and fact- based approach to government, and has prioritized law and constitutionality over ideology throughout his long career. His principled approach to leadership has not been limited to what is happening in political Washington; he continues to advocate for the needs of his constituents: active and retired members of the military, his rural constituents' right to have access to healthcare and education, and ensuring that everyone in his district still have access to an uncensored and protected education system.

His leadership and example reflect The Steady State’s highest ideals: principled, nonpartisan service rooted in expertise, truth, and honoring the constitution.

With another term in the House of Representatives, Representative Vindman will continue to fight not just for his constituents, but for the American experiment as a whole. He will face the unique challenges this administration presents towards constitutionality and rule of law head-on, as he's done since the start of his career.

Representative Vindman's experience in America, part of a family of Ukrainian immigrants escaping totalitarian communism, rising through the ranks of the US military, and fighting to uphold the constitution in the face of authoritarianism prepare him for another term in Congress. His unique background has given him a deep understanding of the importance of rule of law, the need for an apolitical national security apparatus, and the dangers that the lack thereof would bring to a nation. He understands that the role of a public servant is first to uphold the Constitution, regardless of the personal consequences it may bring. Voters can be certain Representative Vindman will always put his nation and constitution first, and party politics second.

At a time when the rule of law is under siege and democratic institutions are strained, Representative Vindman offers something increasingly rare: a perspective on government that's grounded in integrity and bipartisanship. He doesn’t just talk about the importance of upholding the integrity of our government systems and its apolitical nature; he’s sacrificed years of his military and political career to uphold those values, regardless of the consequences.
